Millions Of Shoppers Using Disposable Credit Card Numbers, Vendor Says

Orbiscom, which produces secure payment solutions for bank and credit card issuers, says that online shoppers using a system under which a one-time number linked to their actual credit card account is disposed after a purchase - an extra security measure - now number in the millions. More than 60% of credit cards and online payment systems are now offering the Orbiscom service as an option, the company says.

The service provides an added measure of confidence to consumers wary of exposing their actual credit card numbers over the web, according to Diane Shaib, executive vice president. "By fronting a different number that is linked to their actual credit card number, consumers can rest assured that their confidential financial information will not be stolen from a vendor's database or accidentally revealed by the vendor," Shaib says.

Orbiscom has made available to payment card issuers a series of enhancements to its payment solutions, which are geared to make it easier and more secure for consumers to shop online, Shaib adds. Among them is the ability for card holders to set a spending limit on their card, under which transactions that exceed the limit are declined in advance.

Most recently, Orbiscom has added the ability to electronically capture and store copies of receipts for online purchases, which frees shoppers from printing the transaction record so as to save a copy of it. While major credit card and payment services such as Discover and Bank of America offer the option of disposable account numbers, PayPal's Secure Card service is currently the only card issuer to offer both one-time account numbers and the new electronic receipt capture.
